Question
My 11 year old cat is not herself lately. We recently discovered that she has fleas and we gave her a flea bath and sprayed the house down. But now she just sits in one spot for most of the day and doesn't do anything. We took her to the vet today and my concerns were blown off and I was told this is normal. This does not seem normal for my cat. She was laying on my bed and I was sitting watching her and she moved to smell my hand, and then she started licking my hand which isn't abnormal, but then I decided to take her a bowl of water and she started drinking like crazy. Then I did the same with the food and she ate. Something is not right here and I am concerned, I don't like seeing her like this.

Thank You for the help,
Alex

Answer
My question is this: was she like this before you sprayed her for fleas or the house? What did you use on the house or on her?

I need more information than what you gave me. If she has been this way since you de-fleaed her, I would suspect that she might be anemic from the fleas and/or that she is having a reaction to the chemicals.

If she was like that before you got rid of the fleas then I would again suspect anemia or something else like kidney disease, liver,or a thyroid problem. There are many things that could be wrong just from having fleas. She might be anemic as I mentioned but she also could have a flea induced parasite, or a tick parasite or a virus.

If she isn't current on her vaccinations (again you didn't give me that information) she could have picked up something from a neighborhood cat or something airborne.
If your vet blows off your concerns it's time for another vet. No one should ever treat your concerns for your pet that way. You know her habits at home- the vet doesn't. You need to let him know what you used on her and everything she was or wasn't doing. His job is to look between the lines and do some testing with bloodwork to see how she is doing. Even if it looks good, at least you know.
An 11 yr old cat is at the age of getting many age related problems and kidney failure is usually number one on the list. So start with some blood work or a new vet that will listen to you.

I hope this helps. Please let me know what happens.
