Question
Hello Hilary-

My 4-yr-old male, American short hair Cat (Yogi) has recently been diagnosed with hip dysplasia.  He was rescued and is the light of my life!  The vet prescribed 1/2 baby aspirin every other day, but I read about a product called Synflex (http://www.activexamerica.com/pets/) that helps "rebuild cartilege" and ease the pain.  Any advice??  His limping is getting a little better, but I want to know I am doing everything I can!

Thank you in advance!
Kathi

Answer
Hi Kathi!  Your poor little Yogi!  1/2 of a baby asprin every other day indefinately, can cause a lot of wear and tear on the kidneys, and being that cats are known to develop kidney disease, I would steer clear of the asprin.
You can talk to your veterinarian about Synflex, Glucosamine, Etogesic and other medications that may be more beneficial.  These medications are wonderful for helping arthritis.  Holistically, Bovine Cartilidge and Shark Fat pills can help as well.  I would definately suggest getting him on a medication formulated for animals with arthritis than keeping him on the baby asprin that can cause long term effects.
I hope this answers your question, and please feel free to ask me any more.  If you have any questions about the other medications I have listed, I can give you some websites on them.
Keep in touch and give Yogi some kisses for me!
Hilary
