-----Question-----
Hi I have a 185gal saltwater tank about 2 weeks ago I noticed these small white things that were on the filter box, rocks, sides of the tank I took as much out as possible to clean off and a few days later they were back I have checked books and web sites but cant figure out what they are or how to get rid of them .Some are smaller then others and in certian spots they seem to clump together they seem to stick to everything and it seems almost impossible to get them off the hoses and other things.Someone told me that they were sponges and they were good for the tank but I dont want them. On first lookong at them you would think that they were a very white brine shrimp but they dont move that I can see The only things in my tank are a very large sailfin tang and live rock and have been there for 8 months now My husband has a 50 gal reef tank and told me they were in his tank last month but he got rid of them please help me if you can i am at a loss with this
Many Thanks
Linda
-----Answer-----

Linda,

they sound like some type of sponge.  It is hard to tell were I can not see and inspect them up close.  If you bought live rock than I would belive that they hitch hiked
on the rock because in most cases hitch hikers take 6-10 months to habitat a system.  Let look through some texts and see if I can give you a solid response.

I will try and give you an answer by Tuesday
Good luck

Answer

sorry this is late both my boys have a little cold.

based on my research they seem to be a type of tropical sponge. The only why I found to get rid of them was to scrub them off and this is not 100% effective.  Sorry I could not be of more help.  There are some angle fish who eat sponges not sure what the best type is so I can look if you like.

Good Luck
Todd
