Best fish for 14 gal tank

I have a 14 gallon tank with 3 neon tetras. I was just wondering what kind of fish are best for a tank that size?
I got this tank in october and let it cycle for about a week and a half before putting any fish in.  i then put in 5 neon tetras, 3 mollies, 2 platy's and a placo.  I know now that this was too many fish (this is my first real fish tank) and all but 3 tetras have died.  i found out the problem was amonia and did everything i could to rid the tank of amonia, and now it is finally amonia free.
SO before I go and get more fish, i want to make sure i am making the right choices.  i found out that a 14 gal tank is too small for a placo...is there a fish i can get to achieve the same purpose of cleaning the algea?
is 14 gal too small for cichlids?

hi, you have posted this in the saltwater section so you may get a better answer in fresh water section.

14gals is pretty small for cichlids as they do have to be kept in a species only tank. there are some small shell dwelling cichlids that are pretty interesting fish (can't remember their names) malawi are a deffinate no as they do grow pretty big and are super aggressive. some south american cichlids are reasonably small.
