Clownfish fighting

Question
I have 5 clownfish and put them into the aquarium (100 gal tank) separately.  They never get along with each other, keep fighting.  I try to separate a more aggressive one, but a less aggressive one becomes aggressive.  I have separated them with a little box inside the tank but it's no use after putting back.  Do you have any suggestions?  Thanks.

Answer
Hi Wendy. Most species of clownfish will not tolerate other clownfish in their tank with them. They are extremely territorial when mature and will defend their space aggressively. My suggestion to you is to take back all but one of these fish from where you got them. The store you got them from should have been informed enough to let you know that this many clownfish would be trouble in any size tank. The only exception to this would be your percula clowns however I've seen them become pretty scrappy with one another as well. There are no rules, however, some clownfish will live quite happily together, others may fight to the death! The most aggressive species are your maroon clowns, tomato clowns, fire clowns, and skunk clowns. All others will still fight depending on personality. It is possible to establish a mated pair but you must by two very young juveniles about 1/2 an inch long. They will both be males. As they mature, the most dominant individual will develope into a female and a pair bond will be formed.
