Question
hello Paul! i just started establishing my new 10 gallon saltwater tank with live rock(i only plan to keep some clowfish) and i just purchased a bulb anemone. The day after, the water got cloudy and i tested for nitrate which turned out very good but the ammonia is sorta high its not teal blue but its green and i know thats bad. Would a 25% or 50% water change be good? or would it stress out the anemone too much? what other product can i use to get rid of the ammonia??

Answer
bulb anemone/bubble tip, firstly my advice would be to take the nem back to where you bought it. anemones are very hard to care for and should only be kept in very well lit, in high water flow and mature tanks over a certain volume. sorry to be the bringer of bad news.

Anemonies, as you may know, move around your tank to find a suitable place to live. if the tank is too small they, probably, won't find anywhere suitable. It is likely to turn itself inside out and die.

if there is ammonia in the tank it's an indication that the tank hasn't cycled properly. it means there aren't enough bacteria to convert the ammonia into nitrite and from nitrite into nitrate. the best solution, as i have already said, is to get the nem outta there ASAP. start again with the cycling, wait until you get:
phosphate 0
ammonia 0
nitrite 0
nitrate 0-20
even then stay well away from the anemones, if you want clown fish they will host in any number of soft corals. a toadstool soft coral is a safe bet, they still need quite strong light mind.

i hope that helps, please let me know how it goes!
regards
Paul
