Question -
I aquired a new home, and in the new home I have a large (60 gallon?) fish tank. There is a barracuda (so I was told) very aggressive, a blue beautiful fish (have no idea what it is)- a small lethargic bottem feeder that eats the algae. Then a fish that is a bottom feeder that buries itself, so I really have no clue as to what it is. I am trying to figure out who is male, and who is female. Right now, I bought something to remove some of the nitrates, but I would like to clean the tank. What is the safest way?

thank you
Jana

Dear Jana,
A Barracuda? Facinating. You must let me know what species of Barracuda it is--if it is one.
Here is the link to a video and pictures of a freshie-
"wwww.aquariumfish.net/catalog_pages/wild/ctenolucius_hujeta.htm"

Knowing if your aquarium is freshwater or saltwater would really help and a detailed description of the bottom feeder would help me indentify him/her.

Many people get into the notion that fish like Barracudas and Piranhas are very savage animals that tear up anything in the aquarium. But fortunately this isn't true and most of them are shy around people. Is the Barracuda afraid of your hand? I don't mean to make you risk your fingers but I doubt he would bite. Not to mention many fish are terrified of a aquarium siphon. So if you are worried you can get an extra long siphon tube to avoid exposing your hand so much in the aquarium water. Try to identify him/her first before deciding to fear him. He is probably more scared of you.
Think about it this way, if he was so aggressive he would not allow the existance of the two bottom feeders.

If you don't mind, please try to get back to me with the a more description of the bottom feeders and let me know what your 'barracuda' really is. I would imagine he might be freshwater.

Best wishes and I hope this helps a little!
Happy fishkeeping!
