Question
I have a 32 gallon tank which houses six platies a guppy, a pleco, three zebra loaches(just added), six zebra danios and I plan on adding two dwarf gouramis in a few weeks. I am having a problem with algae.  I think it is either brush or red algae.  It is black in colour and is mainly on my plants but there is also some on my decorations.  I would like to know what kind of fish would help get rid of the algae.  the other fish graze on it at times which leads me to believe it is brush algae and not red algae which I understand few fish will eat. any suggestions?

Answer
Dear Kerry,
Well it sounds like you indeed have what is known as Black Brush Algae. And controlling Brush algae is pretty straight forword. Make sure that your aquarium isn't getting too much florescent lighting. 10-12 hours is best. And that you are certain not to overdose with fertilizers.

*The best control tends to be a good group of algae eating fish. A group of Siamese Algae eaters are good at keeping this type of algae under control. And Rosy barbs are well known to snack on this type of algae. Of course severe cases it is best to manuelly remove any affected leaves and or plants. It is nearly impossible to remove black brush algae without tearing up the plant leaf and causing tissue damage so simply snipping off the affected leaves is the best way as well as introducing a good team of Siamese Algae eaters.

I really hope this helps!! If you would like to read more a bit more about algae and indentifying different types. Please visit-
