Pregnant Balloon Molly

Question
Hi,
I've had a female molly since the end of December. She is much fatter than the male, and she has little black spots all over her body( I don't know if she naturally has spots or if it's a sign of pregnancy.) She has looked pregnant since the beginning of January.  How low does it take for a balloon Mollies to have babies?  ( I have read that it can be anywhere between 50-70 days.)  Is there anything I can do to speed along the process?  Is there anything I could have done to to cause her to stall.  She's in a 10 gal. tank that has been divided.  She is the only fish in that section.  I read that a male fish could stress her out.  Please let me know if I'm doing the right thing. I'm just concerned because it has already been 2 months.

Answer
hey Stephanie,
she is definatly pregnant.
it normally takes about a month to a month and a half for a molly to have babies from the day she mates until the day she gives birth.
Stress will sometimes delay or cause a premature delievery. If you only have one male and one female, I would buy one or two more females. Normally one male will stress out a female if there is only one, and it helps for there to be multiple females.
You are doing the right thing though. When she's ready, she WILL have her babies. if she is a young and/or first time mother, it will probably take longer than normal to have the litter. Also, alot of young and first time mothers tend to give birth to some stillborn babies, so don't be alarmed if some are born dead. A few eggs are normal too, that just means they weren't fertilized.

uping the temperature to 80 degrees should also help, and feeding her brine shrimp might help. Alot of the time pregnant mothers can barely eat becuase their stomachs are smooshed from being so pregnant, so brine shrimp will temp them to eat.

Hopefully you get some healthy new babies, but don't worry. You are doing everything correctly, and if the litter ends up being not making it then also don't worry. She will have PLENTY more litters in the future, and the more litters hse has the healthier the fry tend to be and the more tend to survive.
Goodluck!!
