bala shark, new tank

Question
Hi, We have a new 100 gallon tank.  I have it setup now with 2 tetra power filters (both rated for 60 gallons), two long bubble wands, gravel, and lots of rock formations.  It has been running a few days to start cycling the water and filters.  We were looking at the local fish store and see a few we like.  I really like the look of the bala sharks and would like an idea of what to put with them and how many of each fish would be appropriate.  We'd like something colorful but easy to care for.  I would like to understock the tank as we have a 10 gallon with only 2 tiny fish (zebra danio and a platy) and a plecostamus and it is so nice and easy to keep clean.
Thanks,
Beth

Answer
Beth-
Your tank will take a few weeks to complete cycling.  I would advise against adding any fish for at least another 2 weeks.  That being said, in 100 gallon tank, any ammonia the initial fish produces will be quickly diluted.  I'd suggest using Bio-Spira if you want to speed up the process.  Otherwise, patience is required.

Excellent choice on the Bala Sharks.  They're wonderful to observe.  They do best in groups of 5+.  They will grow, large.  When you buy them from the stores, they're about 3 inches, they'll get up to 10".  They're extrmely hardy, and will withstand all but the most extreme circumstances.  They will go well with most other semi-aggressive fish, such as barbs or red-tail sharks.  Some nice tiger barbs would add some color along with red tails, 6 of each, totaling 24 fish, toss your pleco in there, because it will out grow the 10 gallon, and you've got a gorgeous tank!

You've got the equipment, and for the most part, you've picked out the fish.  All you need now is to wait for the tank to finish cycling.  Let me know if you have any more questions.
