Question
Hello. I have a 55 gal and a 20 gallon tank. I do not have much experience
with fish and I want to get fish that are as low maintenance as possible. A
friend told me to get ciclids mainly oscars, but to not get more than 2 for the
size of the 55 gal tank. Basically I want to know if this is a good choice of fish
to get and what is needed to maintain the tank and the fish?
Thanks,
Tiffany

Answer
You can only get one oscar in the 55 gallon.  It will live out its full life in that tank, which is about 10 years!  Keep the twenty gallon tank as a quarantine.  Only one though.

Filtration is key to an Oscar tank.  Oscars produce an obsurd amount of waste, and are prolifically messy eaters.  I'd go with two Penguin filters, Emperor 350s.  This way, you reduce the amount of times you need to do water changes.  Make sure to keep the tank sparsely decorated.  Oscars are inherently clumsy creatures, and can get dinged up easily on rocks and woods.  Oscars are hardy animals, and will survive all but the worst conditions.

Let me know.  Good Luck!
