bubble-eyed goldfish, compatible fish

Question
QUESTION: We've recently set up a 20 gallon tank with a total of 10 fish and 2 frogs in it. The fish are 2 Mollies, 2 plecocostamus? (whip tail type), 4 various goldfish, and 2 swordtails. We were told at the store these fish were all compatible. After reading various q/a's in your forum, i now see that they may not be very compatible. One of our goldfish is a bubble-eye type - is he/she the same as a 'celestial eye'? Otherwise, any suggestions as to compatibility with the various types? The Mollies and swords are much smaller than the goldfish, but still attack them. Other goldfish as all fantails - one Black Moor, and a slightly smaller regular gold-tone, and a larger silver tone one.
ANSWER: Hello,

Having any fish that are aggressive towards the sensitive eye pouches of bubble-eye goldfish is not a good idea. The 'sacs' underneath your fish's eye are delicate- and they can easily be damaged or wounded. Also, fancy goldfish can be quite clumsy and slow, which may make them easy victims for an overly aggressive fish. If you find that your fish are being aggressive towards your goldfish at all, it is a good idea to seperate them.

I hope this helps.

Stephanie

QUESTION: Over the 'new tank syndrome' period, we've lost one frog and the male swordfish. But today we ended up removing the Mollies to their own tank because they attacked the bubble eye until his side was ripped and swollen. (We caught them 'in the act' of attacking him.) So far he seems ok otherwise, though. Will keep them separated and hopefully he will heal. Looking for a bigger tank for the Mollies and the swordtails so they will be less crowded - only have a small container available right now. Any other ideas on Compatible fish for goldfish? That are not aggressive?

Answer
Hello,

For the most part I recommend keeping goldfish tanks for goldfish only. If it is a heated tank, you could probably get a pleco or cory catfish though. Both are docile, bottom dwellers. Because their mouths are located on the underside of their head, they usually can not viciously bite or attack other fish. They can chase fish though, so trying to find calm ones should be a goal.

Best of luck.
