I'm guessing you're cycling a new tank? Usually when the cycle is completed-about 4-8 weeks. If you don't have a test kit, buy one, and when you're ammonia and nitrites are reading 0 ppm, and nitrates are showing up, then you're tank is cycled-and you can slowly add a few new non-hardy fish.
