Question
Please help me!

I have 2 goldfish. They are sick. I think I tried already everything. In the beginning it started that their fins started to have white edge and little tiny holes in them. They was also some of those white stringy materials covering body and fins, it looked like they are melting away. I started with Fungus Cure from Aquarium Pharmaceuticals. It make water green. I follow instructions, but after a week I did not see any change for better. It became worst - tails lost most of of tissue in between those nerve rays and have some bleeding in the back of the body, also all fins became sick as well. I was told to try Pimafix All natural fungus cure also from Aquarium Pharmaceuticals . Still after few days nothing happened. The don't want to swim or eat. Didn't eat for almost two weeks. I'm desperate for help. Today I got Maracyn and started them on this medication. I don't know how to help them. I have them for so long and they are so beautiful. Please help me.

Answer
Hey :)

It sounds as though you have a mixture of a few diseases.

One diseases could be anchor worm. It indicated that your fish have anchor worm by saying it white string materials covering the body and fins. There are so many cures suggested for Anchor Worm. Over the counter treatments have been developed, with some success. Alternatively, you may treat the aquarium with 2mg/litre potassium permanganate, this approach has had much success. After treatment has ceased, I recommend feeding the fish antibiotic food, available from many aquarium shops. If this is not available, use a mild anti-biotic additive to the water, available again from aquarium shops. The anti-biotic will ensure no secondary infection occurs, as this is often the cause of death.

It has been suggested to remove the worms yourself. Using anti-parasitic medication, dab the worms first with a cotton swab to kill them. Then, gently remove with tweezers. After the worms have been removed, use an antibiotic designed for fish and dab the wounds sites with it. This will prevent a secondary infection. Although it has had varied success, this approach is not the best idea as the worms are often burrowed so deeply that physical removal may harm the fish.
Adding small amounts of aquarium salt also helps.

The second disease could be fin, tail or mouth rot.Rot can result from many different things. Common causes include bacterial infection, pH fluctuation, nippy aquarium mates. The most common cause is poor water conditions which lower the fish's immune system increasing the likelihood of a bacterial infection. The infection often occurs as a result of slightly damaged fins.

First and foremost correct poor water conditions, check pH and correct as required. Antibiotics from your vet will treat the infection, however permanent scarring may occur if the rot is extensive. Fin Rot medication is also available from pet shops. Death can occur if left untreated, or left too late.

Hope this helps
