Question
I purchased a 250lt 2nd hand tank. I have a power head that pushes 1100lts/hr with filter wool as the filter medium & some plants. What filter SHOULD I have in this tank for my American Chiclids? I use a small pebble base on the floor with river rocks for the fish to hide under. Thanks, Howard

Answer
Hi Howard,
It all depends upon your stocking level and the species of cichlid in question. Some fish pollute more than others and larger fish of course such as oscars will need strong filtration. So you kind of have to use your judgement a bit on this one according to your stocking levels. But on average, I've gotten by along fine with a powerful HOB filter. But what's usually recommended the most is a canister filter rated for your tank size. Better yet is a combination of a canister and a HOB power filter. This would be the ideal situation and provide you with the best filtration. However, as long as you keep up with the water changes and your fish are not too large or big polluters, then a strong HOB power filter or one canister filter will be enough.

Best wishes and I hope this helps!
