Scales

Dear Chris-
I accidentally fed my tropical fish goldfish food flakes.  Now my two red-eyed tetras are missing some scales.  Is there any connection between the two?

Hi Emily;

I don't think the food had any effect. I've used goldfish food in when I run out of the tropical kind occasionally. Scale loss is most often due to fighting, bullying, itching, breeding activity or injury from startled fish hitting objects in the tank. Watch to be sure everyone is getting along okay, no one is nipping, they aren't scratching themselves because of disease, and that the tank is big enough for the fish you have. The scales should grow back as long as the cause of their injury is eliminated.
