betta cant eat

Question
My betta can't seem to get his food into his mouth, even though he keeps trying.  Also hasn't been very active. What is wrong, and how can I help him?

Answer
Hi Pam;

There are several possibilities. Have you had him very long? Has he eaten for you before? If he is in a new home he may be in shock. It can take a few days for a new betta to feel comfy enough to eat readily and normally.

Check his water temperature to be sure it's not too cold. Bettas need a temperature at or above 76f. If it's too low they can become lethargic and not be able to eat very well. Also be sure his water is clean and healthy. Bettas need their water changed at least once a week. If there is any leftover food or waste in his tank it should be removed right away.

It could be an infection or perhaps a blockage of some type in his throat. If his water is clean and is warm enough I would try using an antibiotic such as "Maracyn" or "Maracyn Two". Aquarium salt and BettaFix along with the antibiotic  may help too.

if you could give me more information about him and his tank such as; size, how often it is cleaned, how long you have had him, what kind of food you have offered, etc., I might be able to help more.
