orange & silver grommie turning black

the grommie started turn black on it's belly and has traveled into the face area. Is this an illness or disease?

It's very hard to tell with this type of description.  Gouramis can change color due to several reasons.

The first thing I would do is get your water quality checked as this is often the culprit for fish showing signs of distressed.

Take 1-2 cups of aquarium water to your local pet store and ask them to test for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, hardness and O2.

This will get you moving down the right path toward diagnosing any possible problem with your fish.
