betta - gills

Question
I have had a betta for about 3 weeks and when I approach his tank, he swims to
the top to seemingly adorably greet me, probably because he thinks I will give
him food.  Is this actually the reason?  Also, sometimes I notice his gills flare
when he "greets" me.  Is this caused by a bacterial infection or is this a defense
mechanism...or what?  Thanks so much for your help.

Answer
Hi Brian,
This is how bettas normally behave which is very good because it means he is happy and in good health. The gill flaring is a territorial and excitement response. Very comical aren't they?

Bettas are one of those fish that tend to love to interact with people.

Best wishes,
Karen~
