Setting up a freshwater aquarium

Question
Hello Karen,
One of my friends has sold me his 55 gal. tank. It has been in use, but I want to start from the begining. I have read that you can use aquarium salt to clean the tank. Is it also a good idea to use aquarium salt with the substrate on a normal basis?

Answer
Hi Jared,
Sure you can use aquarium salt plus some hot water to help clean your aquarium. Just make sure to not use any kind of chemicals that would be toxic to your fish.

Aquarium salt is not needed to keep fish healthy longterm and does not need to be added on a regular basis. Good clean water provided by regular water changes is a much better preventative against diseases and overall poor health.

Best of luck with your new tank!
Karen~
