Tetras :)

Question
I dont know if you remember me but i asked a question the other day about adding fish.

I bought 4 more neons and 4 black neons.

I now have:
6 neons
5 black neons
5 glowlights
4 cories

I want to add two or three more species of tetras.

I dont mind slightly overstocking as i do 35% twice a week water changes and also tetras are not the messiest fish :)

Can you recommend some species of tetras i can add and how many?

Thanks a Lot  :)

Answer
Hi Jack
Yep I remember you :)
That's good you added the extra neons.  I would wait at least a week or two before adding anymore fish, think I mentioned before, that way the beneficial bacteria can catch up with the extra fish in the tank.

As for new tetras.....well....it depends on what you're local store has, since selections will vary dramatically.  I'm not a big tetra fan, mainly because of the price of them by me, and frankly the stores by me suck when it comes to fish lol....usually very sickly looking fish.  But I have had some black skirted tetras for a few years now with no problems ie: fighting, fin nipping, etc.  I also have had some albino Buenos Aires tetras for some years, and they're ok, they do occasionally chase around the other fish and each other-but no fin nipping.  I think I recall serpae tetras and there's one other type I can't recall that tend to be "territorial" and may nip fins.

I've always kind of liked I think they're called Penguin or Emperor tetras, kind of have a purple stripe look to them, but they may be too similar to your black neons.  I also like the rummynose tetras.  They may be a good addition to your tank.  Here's some links with photos and info on some species:

Have you also thought about some rasboras or smaller barbs(not tigers)?

I also like the harlequin rasboras and those denison barbs. I've seen the denison barbs at a chain pet store, but they want 30.00 for it.....Cherry barbs and rosey barbs are also supposed to be pretty peaceful.  Hatchet fish are another that are kinda neat as well.  Just some other fish to think about.

And, as far as overstocking...like I said, your water change schedule is good in that regard.  I always go a bit conservative in my recommendations, especially without knowing the "expertise" level of people.  All the fish I mentioned do prefer to be in groups, so I would add at least 3-5 of each kind.  I think at least one more "grouping" would be fine, 2-3 more different species I think would really be pushing it though.

Good luck!  Let me know if you have more questions.
