Question
Found your site last Wed.  Cleaned his water, stopped feeding - 3 pellets a day.
Tried a pea after 4 days - it's a week tomorrow.  Just how long CAN he go withot
food...or what next!  Hate to lose the little guy - he's an office mascot

Answer
Hi Rose,
Oh I'm sorry to hear that.

The pea feeding may not be the key here now, since its obvious its not really helping. Bettas can often go a month without food. He must not have constipation which is a common reason bettas get swim bladder disorder. There are many causes though and factors involved. Swim Bladder disorder can also be caused by a bacterial infection (which would require a medication in the water such as those made my "Mardel" brand or an antibiotic food), or even an injured swim bladder due to accidental rough handling during water changes, or pouring water in too fast, ect...

And in some fish, the swim bladder will just start to loose function as they age or due to some deformation.

Does he seem sickly otherwise besides the buoyancy problem? He may have an internal infection. Its up to you to decide if you think he may need treatment, I can only offer suggestions.

Try to eliminate pellets from his diet if you had been feeding them. They are very well-known to cause SBD and they are often hard to digest. Variety is most important in a betta's diet.

This website offers the best info about bettas-

I hope this helps and best of luck!!
