Catfish eggs??

Question
Ok so my roommate and I bought 2 catfish from Wal-mart this past Saturday night.  We set up the tank and let the catfish into the tank Sunday.  Our tank was cloudy on Monday.  We thought we had been over-feeding them and that made the water cloudy,so I did a half tank water change.  Then last night after feeding them I noticed one had a really big stomach.
Then today after returning from classes I noticed small pinky balls in the rocks at the bottom.  Some are bigger than others.  And one catfish has a pinky circle by the base of the tail on the underside.
Could those pink balls be eggs?
The catfish we have are about 2-3" long, silvery-white with black spots all over their back and fins.
I noticed your previous answer about clear eggs and have been looking for them but I am not sure.  I have searched other websites for answers but have been unsuccesful.
And the water is still cloudy and we have been feeding them less.
Could we just have happened to get a male and female and stimulated the egg-laying process?

Answer
Hi Amanda,
It sounds like you have Pictus Catfish. Unfortunately there haven't been any instances of pictus spawning in the home aquarium so there isn't much info out there on their breeding behavior or their eggs. It's also extremely difficult to tell any gender differences.

Is there any way you could send a picture of the pink egg-like balls? I'd be curious to see it. I'm not sure what it might be except maybe its an odd form of fish waste perhaps?

The cloudy water is common with new tanks and is due to a bacterial bloom from the sudden nutrient overload that takes a while to go away as the tank needs time to establish (several weeks). Beware of ammonia issues that can come about as a serious problem in recently setup tanks. If you aren't familiar with tank cycling, you might read here-

Best of luck and I hope this helps!
