Pearl Gourami - Male or Female

Question

Pearl Gourami
Hi,
I have one Pearl Gourami. I have read a bunch of sites and looked at many, many photos and still can't decide if I have a male of female Pearl Gourami.
I have her in a tank with a couple danios and a couple tetras plus two peppered cory's. I would like to find a companion. I assume I would be safe with another female either way but would like to have an opposite sex, not for breeding just company, silly but I think it's lonely.
I'm leaning toward female but the more I look the more confused I am.

She? stays kind of quiet so I can get a good look at the top fin but it's smooth not jagged. I would really like another one oddly have called at least 20 pet shops to no avail and will probably have to order one on the net and would like to specify sex. Can you help me please?
Thanks for any input
Linda

Answer
Hi Linda

The photo you attached is a little fuzzy and hard to make out, but it looks like a male. Male Gouramis are slimmer than females and usually smaller. But the dorsal fin (top) is the best way to sex them. The dorsal fin of the female is short and rounded, while the male has a longer dorsal that comes to a point.

Hope this helps, good luck!
