bump on goldfish tail

Question
We have 2 goldfish and three snails in a 20 gallon tank.  One is a goldfish with a long fancy tail and the other is a large black moor.  We've had the gold one for a little over a year and he has recently developed some white bumps (almost like a small pimple) along the front edge of his tail.  Just the other day I noticed two of these bumps on the black moors tail too (we've had him about 6 months).  The snails were added a little over a month ago.
Any idea what this is and how to fix it?
Thanks very much for your time.
Mary

Answer
Hello Mary-

The bumps are probably a small bacterial infection, and are easily treated and rarely fatal.

Try treating the entire tank with aquarium salt, Melafix, and QuickCure. These will kill off any bacteria, and promote healing of the scabs. Most of these infections usually fix themselves up after a week or two, and the medications will speed up the process.

Hope this is useful!
