Question
Hi Kathryn. I have a 29 gallon tank. I have 2 Mollies (one black, one dalmatian)and 5 platys plus one very old and big iridescent shark. I had one more black Mollie mamma but she died. Three days after I bought her, she had 22 babies! (yes, 22) The other dalmatian Mollie just had 7 more babies and one of the platys had 5. Now it looks like another platy is about to pop. What do you think I should do with all of them. I enjoy them now but if they continue to breed and the babies get bigger, I am afraid my tank will not be able to support all of them. Any suggestions??? Thanks, Stephanie

Answer
I'm glad to hear you're enjoying fishkeeping.
There is not much I can suggest, your tank will soon be heavily overrun, as Mollies and platies are livebearers, they breed like mad!
Unless you separate the males and female fish, they will continue to breed. A lot of fish shops shall take in baby fish, so when they are a couple of centimetres long, I would take them to a fish shop and see if they will take them off your hands.
There is no way (at least none that I have heard) to stop livebearers breeding unless they are all of one sex.
If you enjoy breeding the fish much, it is always a possibility to buy a bigger tank (50 gallons or so) and you will have a lot more room for fry (offspring) to thrive and grow.
I am sorry I could not suggest much.
Thanks for asking,
Kathryn
