betta fish jumped, fins falling off

Question
Hi. I really need some advice. My wonderful betta fish jumped out of its bowl. I found it on the floor and have no idea how long it was there. I put it back in the water (this was 24 hours ago now) and it is swimming and ate two pellets today. It was breathing very heavily last night and this morning but seems to be breathing normally now. I just went in to check on him and noticed that some of his fins are breaking off from the tip to half-way down. When I found him on the floor he was starting to dry out. Could the fins be breaking off because he was drying or is he sick? I greatly apprecaite your help!

Answer
Hello Sarah-

Hope you get this response, I had some trouble replying to your question.

Anyhow, your little guy should be just fine. If he made it for 24 hours, he should be back to normal in no time. Bettas are pretty strong when it comes to surviving "out of bowl" experiences.

Since he was a little "crispy" when you found him, it's normal to see parts of his fin break off. With clean water, good nutrition, and a few doses of Melafix (which can be found at WalMart/PetsMart) the fins should regrow in a few weeks to a month.

Hope this helps,
