Question
Hey, i notived that about 6 of my 9 cichlids have a cloudy-like growth on their eye.  I think i can match it up to Saprolegnia Fungus from what i understood on numerous websites, however i do not know how to get rid of it. I have a 55 Gallon tank with a double aquatech filter - i think its for 30 to 60 gallons im not sure; but what do you recomend i use to get rid of the fungus or parasite, whichever it is.  Also, if what you recommend, will i have to isolate the infected fish? or is it best to treat the entire tank?  Thanks so much! -Josh

Answer
Hi Joshua,
The fungus is a symptom.  It results when the eye is damaged, typically because another fish has bitten that fish in the eye.  You need to solve that problem.  Treating the fungus will not solve the problem.

If you remove the problem (i.e., the aggression) and the fungus still doesn't go away (it often will if it isn't too bad) then you can treat with any of the anti-fungus treatments.

BTW, Saprolegnia is often called a fungus but technically it is a water mold.
