Question
hi, ive noticed that 3 of my female guppys are pregenant and was told to wait for 3-4 weeks, for them to give birth. it has been at least 4 weeks since i noticed that one of my female guppys was pregnant and she still hasnt had her fry. ive bought a baby-hospital type of thing and im not sure wether i should put her in it yet. she looks flat from the site of her, but from the front she is pretty big, and fat.
-my tank has been set up for over a year and a half and i fully cleaned it out about 6 months ago
-my tank is 60 cm by 30cm
-neon fish, guppy fish, a platy, and red eyed tetras live in my tank
-9 fish live in my tank
- the filter is an internal filter
- the ph, ammonia, and nitrate levels are all perfect
- i change water once every 1-2 weeks
-i think my tank contains 40 litres of water

Thanks

Answer
Hi Hannah;

It's hard to say when they could be born. Sometimes they have a few at a time and you don't notice because there can be different litters inside one mother. You just have to wait and see. About 4 days before birthing, most mothers will hide more as well as develop the boxy look to their bellies.

I don't personally recommend the breeder traps. They are just so small and cramped they can stress the mother out too much and don't allow enough room for the babies to grow. It really is best to just put lots of plants in the tank, preferably live fluffy types such as anacharis (elodea), hornwort, and java moss. This allows the babies to hide from the adults as well as providing food for them. The babies and adults like to eat the tiny microscopic organisms on the plants. It helps them grow stronger.

Good luck!
