Ammonia and Nitrite lvls

Question
I set up my new 55 gal tank 3 weeks ago and began cycling the water. I cycled for 1 week and then added my pleco. I transferred him from my 10 gal which he had outgrown. He sat in the 55 gal tank alone for 1 week. Then I purchased and added cichlids, 4 to be exact. (I know your not an expert on cichlids but my question is about water). My plan was to wait another week and then add 4 more. Unfortunately I went to get my water tested and found out my Nitrite and ammonia lvls were high. Ammonia @ 1.0 and Nitrate @ 2.0. Now what? I added stress/water conditioner when I added fish. Should I have to change water already??

Answer
Hi Nicole,
You added too many fish too soon. I would let the cycle run it's course keeping in mind that you may loose some fish. It should take another month or so before i would add any more fish. Don't use ammonia remover unless it gets really bad.
