Question
Hi Lynda,
I have a betta fish about a year and half old. Over the past 6 weeks it has developed a red bump on his face, external and bumpy looking. It has been getting bigger over the last few weeks. Other then the bump he is eating and swimming fine. Anything i can do?

Answer
Hi Lori,
Bumps are very hard to diagnose.  They are tumors that may or may not be cancerous.  When bumps are red, it is because they are infected with bacteria.  One of the best medication is Tetracycline.  If the bump goes down, then it is benign, if not, and the bump keeps getting bigger, then it might be cancerous.  Bettas can live a long time with tumors.  If cancerous, he may live for another 6 months.  The best you can do is keep him comfortable, and happy.  He isn't suffering.
Make sure you have no ammonia, no nitrites, and that nitrates are safe.  Keep his water very clean.
I hope the tetracycline will help the little man, and that he will get better.
