Question
My Betta seems to be having a strange attitude lately.  From some online research I've done it seems he has recently suffered a swim bladder problem since he rests a lot of time on the bottom on the bowl or on top of a leaf of a plant.
But now I'm also seeing air bubbles at top where the water rests.
What do air bubbles represent?

Answer
Hi Bryan,
The bubbles you are seeing are the betta's nest.  A healthy betta blows a nest.  This is normal, but if he still keeps to the bottom of the bowl, and his tummy is swollen, this is a sign of constipation.  Constipation leads to Swim Bladder Disease, and if left untreated will lead to Dropsy.  To avoid this, vary his diet, and be careful not to overfeed.  Feed him 2 pellets or flakes 2-3 times a day.  Feed him one frozen cooked pea with the outer layer removed, and cut into tiny pieces once a week.  Feed the pieces to your betta one at a time making sure he eats them, and that they do not fall to the bottom of the tank.  This is so he can clean out his system, and avoid SBD.  On the day you feed him the pea, feed him nothing else for the rest of the day.  Adding Daphnia to his diet also helps with his digestive system.  The more you vary the healthier he will be.  Keep his water very clean.
