QuestionHello
My question is what is the largest tank an unsupported upstairs floor can handle safely?
I want to get a 125 long tank or is this a bad idea or should I go smaller with a 90 gallon?
It's also going to be a saltwater tank so it would be heavier than a freshwater tank.
Thank you
AnswerHi Thomas,
That is an excellent question. You would really need to consult an architect or structural engineer, but I can tell you that I would not put more than a 90 gallon on an upstairs floor.
And, if I did put a 90 gallon, I would be absolutely sure to put it next to a supporting wall and I would make sure that the tank ran across a number of the floor beams. It is also important that the stand contacts the floor in many places, not just on the four corner legs. Ideally the stand would have a solid bottom contacting the floor everywhere.
Personally I would NOT put a 125 gallon tank anywhere without floor jacks underneath it.
