setting up an aquarium

Question
I lost my last fairground fish after managing to keep them for 2 years.  We had 3 of them.  Our tank has sprung a leak.  Is it fixable?  How do I set up an aquarium for new fish.  I intend to buy these from a pet shop rather than risk those from a fair

Answer
Hello,
The tank is fixable. You should be able to find aquarium silicone at your local hardware store. I have found the best way it to remove all of the existing silicone with a razor blade and then reapply a new set with a popsicle stick. Many people say this is unnecessary, but i have found it's best to replace it all because it will spring a leak again if you don't. Just a few pointers- never move an aquarium while it has water in it, and be sure to check the silicone every couple months just by running a finger over it. Depending on the brand of aquarium, it will have a different lifespan. Higher end tanks like Oceanic Systems last pretty much as long as you will, but cheaper tanks like Aquaeon only last about 3-5 years before needing some sort of replacement like you need. If you are not the DIY type or cannot do the silicone work proffesionally or safely, it will be worth simply buying a new tank.

One thing I aways recommend is building and aquarium for the specific fish you want rather than trying to find what fish will "fit" into your aquarium. Do some research and find what types of fish interest you, report back, and I will be able to help you with aquarium setup in greater detail.
