Question
i have two pigeons and i don't know if they're male or female. I'm a beginner fancier so how should i know if they are males or females or male and female?

Answer
There is no sexual dimorphism in the domestic pigeon.  Meaning that it is not possible to correctly identify the sex of a pigeon simply by looking at it.

That being said, there are ways to make accurate guesses.  If the birds are immature, ie less than 6 months, it can be very difficult.

a.  Within a breed or breeding population, the hens will be slightly smaller than the cocks.

b.  In older hens that have laid eggs, the vent bones can be felt and will be wide apart on a hen and close together on a cock.  This method has fooled even experts, so use judiciously.

c.  The best, and only absolute method is by observation.  Cock birds will "pout", coo and spin on the floor.  Hens will occasionally coo, but a very different sound.

Lastly.  If you only have 2 birds it can be difficult to determine if you indeed have a pair.  In this situation, even two cocks or two hens will act like a pair.
