Question
Hi,

I don't know if there is something wrong with my budgie not like health issues but I'm noticing theres a "line" going from my budgie's breast to the lower abdomen and its going inward but its not that quite deep. Does this mean that my budgie is really skinny and not having enough food? Because my budgie eats a lot. I know that if your budgie is obese, you wouldn't feel the breastbone. Incase of need for info, my budgie is still a baby and i got her two months ago. Please help.

Answer
hello Esther! Ok, there are a couple posibilities here.
If you can feel that her breast bone it really sticking out and she does not feel nice and plump then she is suffering from weight loss. You should be able to feel the bone and the breast should be nice and plump. Since she is eating but loosing weight she may be infected with parasites. Tapeworms and other worms will cause a bird to eat alot, but sucks all the nutriton out of them causing them to loose weight. Look at her dropings to see if they are normal. A good droping should have a nice white center with the fecal deposits on the outside. Watery droppings are another sign. Look up on the internet for an avian vet in your area. This is a serious condition and if not treated it will cause death. the vet will give her Niclosamide (yomesan)(to treat tapeworm), Levamisole (Ripercol-L)(to treat intestinal roundworms)If you cannot find a vet look up those medicines on the internet and you should be able to order them online from a vet site. Until then, give her weak black tea(this aids in digestion and helps restore stamina) and make sure her cage is EXTREMLY clean. Change the news paper every day as well as her water. Give her some vitamins to help control her nutrition. I hope everything works out well and i hope for the best for your bird. good luck!
