Question
I have a cockatiel, could not find anyone for them, but thought budgies were close.  He is very tame and when I hold him he makes this noise like a small happy hissing.  Do you know if that mean he is trying to talk?

Answer
Hello Kay,

I have never owned a cockatiel before so i do not know much about them. But, this noise could potentially mean he wants to talk or imitate something he has heard. I have heard of cockatiels being moderate talkers so this could be it. But most smaller birds are better at mimicking sounds they hear. So, this may be what he was doing. I would continue to talk to the bird and whistle to him. I'm sure he will pick up on something sooner or later. Play the radio and TV and he will hopefully learn to mimic sounds and even learn to talk.
