Is there a reason for no eggs?

Question
Hi, it's been a while since my last question. My female parakeet sits in the nest box for most of the day with the male sitting on the perch just outside of it. When I looked through the hole on the nest box I saw she was just sitting there. She's been doing this for a while now. I check every week or a bit less but there are never any eggs. Is there a reason? They stopped mating almost completely starting a day or two ago, what can this mean? And for the perch that comes with the box, my female pushed it out of the box, is it ok  if there is no perch on the inside? I already had a separate  perch on the outside.

Answer
It sounds promising to me.  If they have been mating and she has been spending a lot of time in the nest, you might have eggs soon.  How long has it been since you put in the nest box?  Don't be discouraged if you don't get eggs this time.  Sometimes it takes a while.

If they've stopped mating, they might just be taking a break, or they could be done.  Keep a close eye on the female to make sure she does not become eggbound; that is a condition where the egg becomes stuck inside the female's body.  If she sort of waddles around, starts sitting on the cage floor, or seems to be having any obvious signs of discomfort, this could be a sign of a problem.

The perch isn't necessary.  It is there for the convenience of the parents, but they do not always want or need it.  Keep in mind that the parents will try to make the nest ideal for them and their babies, and they will do with the nest whatever they please.
