I herd if you put if under a flash light that will work but how explain and how long after the bird lays the egg should i check

Candling is when you take an egg and place it above a light source, like a flash light. And yes this is a pretty good way of telling if an egg is fertile or unfertile. But of course, you have to know what to look for. After the female lays the egg, 7-10 days later you can candle the eggs. Hold the eggs by the "pointier" ends. Do not touch it too much or else you could clog the "pores" in the egg. If the egg has little red veins running through it it is fertile. Also if you can see a dark spot in the egg then it is probably fertile. If the egg is clear and all you can see is the yellow yoke it is either unfertile or it is too early to tell.
