male cockateils hurting babies

Question
I have a great set of breeders whom I have indoors. They are very good parents, up to recently I noticed the male is being mean to the babies by biting them. I have removed him from the cage and things are better, but is this to much for mother to feed five babies (who are just barely beginning to eat on there own) because father was helping too, but they seemed afraid of him. Am I doing the right thing?

Answer
Hello Rebecca and thank you for your post.
You have done the right thing by taking the male out of the cage so that he doesn't hurt the babies.
If you feel that it is too hard on the mother, you can hand fed them too, but if they are beginning to eat on their own, I think they'll be alright.
When they are old enough to and are completely eating on their own, then separate the babies from the mother.  At that time you can put the male back in with the female.

Good luck and God Bless.
