Question
QUESTION: What can I do about the sparrows eating/pecking away at the foundation of my home? I scare them away but only for a few minutes and they come right back. They are now pecking at the screen on the basement window and tearing holes in it. I have contacted numerous pest control business and NONE of them have ever heard of this problem, so far I can't get any resolution. Help !!!!!

ANSWER: I'm a bit unclear. Are they pecking at the cement foundation of your house or only at the screen of the basement window?
If it's the foundation, they may simply be looking for grit for their gizzard, which they need to grind food. If that's the case, provide them with a small pile of fine sand and they might prefer that.
If it's the screen, they may simply be pecking at their reflection in the window. Remove the reflection by covering the window and see if the pecking stops.

QUESTION: WHY.....Would I have to provide them anything? I want to know how to get RID of them since I do not want to have anything to do with them. They don't belong in my life. They are eating my foundation & are pecking away at the window screen. Both of these things are now happening. Is there a way to poison them ??????

ANSWER: Giving them sand would give them an alternative that would not damage your property. You don't say what kind of birds these are (there are lots of kinds of sparrows) but it is illegal to poison them. You would also end up poisoning other birds and animals as well. I doubt they are doing any damage to the cement, just picking up loose gravel.

QUESTION: Roger, they the sparrows are pecking at the cement causing the gravel to loosen and making a mess. The gravel is not loose until they get right  on top almost glued to the wall to the foundation and peck at it. Am very frustated that noone can help with this problem I am having and should no have to deal with something like this at ALL. They are making holes in the wall leading to the basement.

Answer
Well, maybe you'd want to try this. I have not done it myself but grape-flavored Kool-Aid contains a chemical that birds find distasteful; it's sometimes used to keep birds off of blueberries. It's cheap and non-toxic. Try spraying that on part of the foundation and if it works, do the whole foundation.
