Question
I have a miniature Shetland pony and have had her for 2 years now. Around the same time or earlier last year she started to lose her mane and parts of her tail and hair above her nose. I thought it was maybe ringworm (weird thing is it didn't occur in circles, so maybe not# and treated her with Imaverol and after a short time it seemed to clear her problem up. However her mane has not reached its full length again.

The thing is this problem has now re-occurred #only not as bad yet as I've noticed it earlier) but it has started to occur on her hind quarter and her fringe and mane. I don't what it to fall out again and as it will soon be winter i really need to get her treated.I am just wondering what is the best thing to prevent this re-occurring? i worm her at six month intervals and used pour on at the start of summer. I have read that there is stuff to make her mane grow back quicker and intend to get this. She does not like getting sprayed so if you would be able to suggest oral or any creams that would be good.

Further info:
she is a mare at just 4 years old and there is a 3 year old stallion in with her that never seems to have this problem.
I will include a picture of it last year but it is nowhere near as bad as this at the moment.

Thanks for your time, id just like advice on prevention, and clearing it up and what would be the next best steps to take.

THANK YOU

Answer
Sorry for the delay. We had a huge flood and it got into our house. Just got that dealt with. Back to life now....

I recommend a more frequent deworming program. Parasites can be a culprit in hair loss and its the easiest to eliminate. Every other month is a good rule. You could also get a fecal test. Just take a fresh stool sample to the veterinarian for examination. Its an inexpensive test and will give you a good look at what load the horse may have.

There are a few very good hair growth products and those may help but will not eliminate the cause.

Give her another dewormer. A good one like Ivermectin and see if that helps. Then again in two months. Please get back to me on this. Let me know if that helps.
