bleeding
hi corlena! I have attached a photo so you can have a better idea. My horse, a paso fino 7 y/o, I took him for a ride and i noticed that he started bleeding from his hooves shortly after we started. It seems to originate from where the hands end and the hooves begin. It is a small "flow" ..he's not bleeding profusely and it stops when he stops walking. I'm very worried...what can you tell me about this. Gabriel

Answer
Hi Gabriel,

Thank you for your question.  I would strongly urge you to contact your veterinarian with this problem.  Although I have never dealt with this issue before, I am confidant that it can be quite serious.  Some suggestions on what could cause this bleeding would be abscesses that have blown out at the coronary band, necrosis of collateral cartilage in that area, coronary band dystroophy...and the list goes on.  I am not a vet, and I am not there to observe the foot to see what else is going on so I can not answer your question...and would hesitate to do so.  You really need to have your horse seen by the veterinarian and in the interim should restrict exercise, ensure a clean environment for the horse to stand in and clean the coronary band with a surgical soap until the vet comes.  Sorry I can't help more, it really is beyond my scoope.

Thanks, Corlena
