steroids and drugs difference

Question
hello, what is the difference between steroids and drugs in equine terms? are they bad for racing thoroughbreds? what all should supplements contain?

Answer
Hi Caine,

Thank you for your question.  Steroids can be considered as a form of drug...there are so many drugs that it is difficult to answer this portion of the question with any amount of brevity.  It may also be a question better suited for a veterinarian.  Steroids are banned in most legitimate racing circles as are a wide variety of drugs and feed additives...it is a good idea to check with your racing association regarding their banned substances.

In the feed industry, a supplement generally refers to a feed that contains one or a limited number of nutrients, or non-nutrient additives.  A supplement could be energy based, protein based, mineral based, vitamin based or non-nutrient additive based.  A complete feed differs in that it is generally made up of a complete compliment of nutrients.  So there is no minimum array of ingredients required to define a feed as a supplement.

Thanks, Corlena
