Question
Hi, I have a 30 year old gelding Arabian who's tail has began to thin over the past year. Is it just do to his age or is it a medical issue?

Answer
Hi Maddison,

Thank you for your question.  Your horse's tail can be thinning due to a medical reason, his plain of nutrition, or both.  To improve hair and coat quality, including manes and tails, try feeding more vegetable fat in your horse's diet.  You can switch to a feed that is high in fat or you can feed a high-fat supplement or vegetable oil.  The fat will help improve coat quality.

Horse's can also develop a fungus in their mane and tail that will cause their hair to fall out.  The fungus is not something you can easily identify with the naked eye, but your vet could check it out for you. The product M-T-G is available over the counter and works effectively at destroying the fungus and helping your horse restore his lovely tail.

Thanks, Corlena
