Mustang with EPM

Question
My 11 year old(mare) mustang has been diagnosed with EPM, she has had the CSF test so we are sure.  She has been on the medication for about 2 1/2 weeks she has good days and bad days.  It only seems to be in the rear limbs.  My question is, how much should I exercise her?  How can I tell if she is getting better?  Being a Mustang she has always been a little pissy when it comes to following commands,(but she knows who is the boss)so I can't tell if her being resistant is her being Pissy or if the hurts.  Everything I have read states not to over work a horse with EPM.  she is stiff in her rear, but I don't know if it hurts.  My vets says NO but I'm just not sure,  because she seems to be a little more resistant them normal.  I have never worked her in a longe and I don't know if that would be a good way to exercise her. Right now I just walk with her about 30-40 mins every other days.

Answer
Hi Diana,
Right now I would not even walk her. For now I would keep her on stall rest. Most likely your horse is still in pain and will be for a few more weeks. Your horse is also going to have weakness in her legs which will make it difficult to walk. If you can I would massage her legs twice a day. You can judge if she is getting better by her gait, how she seems to be feeling, how she is eating and how she was prior. Good luck with her.
