VISCIOUS MARE

Question
Hello Solange,

I know that if you look at the subject, you may be thinking that I am over exagerating. However, this is not true.  There is a Paint Mare at our stables that is absolutely viscious.  I mean she WILL HURT YOU!  No body can go into her stall or even come very close to it w/o her charging the gait, trying to bit you within seconds.  I don't really know her history except that she was only used as a brood mare.  I wonder if she has been abused in her past because she just doesn't trust anyone.  I truely feel sorry for her and wish that there was something I could do to make her a happier horse and learn to trust people.  I've talked with the owner, and he will let me work with her. However, he is doubtful that I'll be able to make anything out of her.  I once had a gelding that didn't trust people either, since he had been abused, but I spent a whole summer with him doing a little bit at a time, and he turned into the most affectionate, well mannered horse.  However, he was not quite as bad as this mare.  I mean you can't even go into the stall to clean it without her trying to tear you up!  I really wish I could help her, but with her, I don't even know where to begin.  I would say she is over 5 years old and never been broke to my knowledge.  Only the owner can put a halter on her to lead her to the paddock, but she won't tolerate that for long.  Do you have any advice on how I can get close to this mare physically, as well as, spiritually, and learn to gain her trust and friendship?

Sincerely,
Jessica MacLauchlan

Answer
Hi Jessica!

I understand your question and see that you are truly concerned for the emotional welfare of this mare.  But, I cannot give training advice to non-owners of the horse in question.

It appears from your description she is currently in a good situation as far as her physical health, but she has no love for humans.  She is obviously a dominant "Boss Mare" and has found that her assertiveness works on both other horses and humans too.

In instances of this kind where she has been given no understanding of humans, one must speak to her in the only language she knows.  It is very difficult to dominate such an Alpha female and it can be very dangerous too.

The best thing you could do for this mare is to talk to the owner about hiring a local professional trainer who has experience in this mare's breed and behavioral issues.  Spending the time and money now to train her to be a human's partner could give him 20 years of a positive relationship....and he just may learn a little something himself along the way!

Good luck and remember to always wear an ASTM/SEI approved helmet!
