Question
HI
I am trying to train my new horse (8 month old Azteca mare) to follow me while walking on a lead rope. I have no problems getting a halter on her. She will dig her feet in and refuse to move forward.  If I apply gentle and steady pressure and let it go the second she takes a step, this works to some extent. But she usually tries to throw her head back before stepping. Today, for the first time, she reared, and was kicking when I tried to walk with her.
She has been used to doing as she pleases. I have only begun working with her a week ago. She has not been mistreated.
Questions...do I use light tapping on her rear? If so, with what?
Response to rearing?
Thank you.
Rebecca

Answer
Hi Rebecca,
The best way to teach a foal to lead is by applying pressure to the front and back. You will need a properly fitting halter, a long lead rope and a lunge or buggy whip. If you have another person to help, that is even better. Stand at her left shoulder and take the lead rope in your left hand, Pull on the rope and when she takes a step praise her and let her rest for a few seconds. If she refuses to move or tries to back up, then take the long lead rope and run it from her halter around her buttocks, and back to the other side of the halter. You will want to make sure that the rope is uder her tail, and not at at the back of her legs. You will want apply pressure at the head, allowing the rope at her back to guide her forward. If you have another person with you, then they can give her a tab her on the rear. If she tries to bolt on you, then turn her head around so that it is facing you. Make sure that all of your lessons end on a positive note.

I hope this helps.
