Question
Hi Emma,

We have recently bought a Minature Shetland Filly, just turning 3years. She is very well handled, but she keeps nipping and showing her teeth, especially at my 3yo daughter.

I am an experienced horse owner, but have not owned a very young horse before, so find it difficult to know how to manage her habit at this early stage.

It seems to be when she is tied up that she pulls faces at my daughter, and mostly when we are grooming her.  I understand she probably has a ticklish spot somethere.  So far I have retaliated by saying 'no' in a firm voice, and have slapped her on the neck or muzzle to let her know not too. Although am concerned about doing this as it could make her head shy?

She is very well behaved when on her lead reign and walks very nicely.  I have been advised to muzzle her when tied up, and told she would then get bored of trying.

I would be very grateful of any advice as this is obviously a habit I wish to break sooner rather than later.

Thanks and regards

Laura

Answer
Hiya Laura,

Keep doing what you are doing!  Saying NO or DON'T YOU DARE in a firm, low, growly tone should do the trick.  Don't be afraid that a light tap or push on her muzzle will make her head shy,it won't oralternatively a slap on the neck/shoulder accompanied by a firm, low, NO should break the habit.  Muzzling is a true final resort and not necessary in this case.

Congratulations, and good luck with her, hope you have many happy years with her.

Emma xx
