Question
Hello,
i live in Uganda where i have 12 horses who spend most of the 24 hours free together in paddocks, the stallion with his pregnant mares.
All horses are ridden in hacks and doing well, 2 were born with me are now 5 years old also going on hacks.
The stallion came to me when he was 6 month old, he knows me well and i have tried to train him but i do not ride him as i'm not confident enough. On the ground he is well manered, but shakes his head when impatient. When riding he is fine at a walk but at a trot will often start going faster and buck, trying to get the rider off. He is ridden in parelli bridle and was started with naturalhorsemanship same as my other horses.I personally think that he needs to control more his temper and be more respectful but not sure how to teach him or expect this behaviour. Please help, Uganda is very isolated, very few horses and no one does naturalhorsmanship.
Look forward for your advice.
Best Katia

Answer
Since you have had the Stud since he was 6 months old, then anything he knows you have taught him. So the head shaking, going faster and bucking is all you or whoever works him and lets him do this. If you trot him and run him in a round pen then he can only go so fast in a circle. He knows you are not confident and knows you try and hold him back and get nervous, once he figures out that running fast and bucking just gets him more work he will stop.  You are trying to make him stop and you can't, you can make him want to stop or not want to keep going, but you have know how and be able to do it, since you can't, the horse can't.

More ground work, more ride time and more confidence from you is what this horse needs.
